First up win for Tikipunga 2013
First up win for Tikipunga
Tikipunga vs. Bream Bay, 6th April 2013
By Arriane Christie
Tikipunga continued their winning pre-season form by beating Bream Bay 4-1 in their first 2013 league match at Ruakaka on Saturday.
On a dry, hard pitch, the Community Shield winners outclassed the new Premier grade team by retaining most of the possession throughout the game, and giving Bream Bay very few chances to score.
An early goal off the head of Mike Crowley gave Tikipunga the lead and they never looked back. Two more first half goals from Luke Morunga and Steve Crowley saw Tikipunga take a three-nil lead into the break.
Playing under a new player/coach, Dan Johnson, Tikipunga played with a new formation and showed off a couple of their new set moves.
Bream Bay hit back early in the second half when Scott Welsh headed the ball in from a corner kick, but Patrick Moon soon put Tikipunga’s lead back to three when Bream Bay couldn’t clear their goal line.
Johnson was happy to get the three points in the win column early in the season but thought the score line should have been greater, saying his team had to “be a bit more ruthless in front of goal.”
In the other Premier grade match, the second new premier grade team, Madhatters beat Central Brown 2-nil at Onerahi.
