Youngsters step up in Premier Grade win

By Arriane Christie

Tikipunga hosted Mad Hatters in their first game of the new Northland Men’s Premier grade on Saturday, winning the encounter two-nil.

Tikipunga started the game with intensity and spent most of the first half on attack. Any chances Mad Hatters had were quickly shut down by Tikipunga’s defence.

With a number of players out through injury, the younger Tikipunga players really stepped up to the mark. Young Daniel Hilton was given man of the match by coach Clive Adams for his full match effort in defence.

After a number of shots from Tikipunga, it was another young player who opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. Nathan Campbell playing on the left flank spotted the Mad Hatters keeper off his line and chipped the ball over him to take the score to one-nil. That is how it remained at half time.

Mad Hatters came into the second half firing and had their longest period on attack, with their first three shots on goal in the first ten minutes. They were unlucky not to score when a powerful shot deflected off the post.

Then Tikipunga picked up their game again and started to once again dominate the less fit Mad Hatters team. But they were still unrewarded with all of their shots going wide or being saved by the Mad Hatters defence.

It wasn’t until 82nd minute when Daniel Johnston secured the win for Tikipunga. Johnston dribbled the ball through the attacking third before finishing with a powerful shot into the left corner of the net, taking the score to two-nil.

Adams commented on his team’s “lack of patience up front” saying we “missed at hatful of chances”. However, he did mention he was happy with the result. “There are only two rounds in this competition so it is important to get results in every game.”

Tikipunga’s next match against Central Brown has been postponed and the new time is yet to be confirmed.
