In what was described as somewhat of a “dress rehearsal” by player/coach Daniel Dunbar, Tikipunga downed Mad Hatters five-nil on Saturday in the last of their Northland Men’s Premier league matches.

Playing for the first time on their number one home field, Tikipunga came out strong from the start and were on the board less than five minutes in thanks to a breakaway goal from Chris Mitchell. Just five minutes later they extended their lead when Joshua Morunga positioned himself on the post to put a cross ball away.

Dunbar was happy with the way his team started saying he wanted to practice what they had been building towards for the upcoming knockout Cup games. “Going into the Cup games we want to score early and shut the game down.”

Morunga got his double when an unlucky clearance kick by the Mad Hatters defence rebounded off him and into the goal.

Steve Crowley made it four before the break when he got on the end of a nice cross ball, pushing it hard enough past the outstretched Mad Hatters keeper.

Leon Taylor finished the scoring 20 minutes into the second half when he beat the keeper to the ball and slotted home the easy goal.

Dunbar said it was “crucial to get a win and I challenged the boys to get a clean sheet so I was happy with that.”

Tikipunga finished third in the Northland Premier Men’s league and play the first match of their Federation One Cup defence at home next week against Oratia United at 2pm.
