Mitchell scores hat trick as Tikipunga get back on track

By Arriane Christie

Tikipunga got their season back on track after a Chris Mitchell hat trick set up a 7-1 win over Mad Hatters at Tikipunga on Saturday.

According to stand in coach, Daniel Dunbar, the home side had done some soul searching during the week and they started the game strongly. They hit the lead early with goals from Tom Hudson and Josh Morunga inside the first ten minutes.

Mitchell’s first goal came at the 25 minute mark when he secured a crossed ball and slotted it home. Five minutes later he was on the score card again when a long range Tikipunga shot came off the crossbar and Mitchell was there to clean up the scraps.

Mad Hatters had short periods on attack but had no real opportunities to score in the first half.

A clever chip over the advancing keeper from Tikipunga’s Chris Bai made the score 5-nil going into the half time break.

Mad Hatters came out fighting in the second half and had a couple of early shots on goal. They scored first, ten minutes after the break through a runaway goal to Greg Tetlaw. Dunbar praised Mad Hatters for their second half effort. “Most teams could have gone into a shell but they came out [and] fought hard in the second half.”

Tikipunga were pulled up on a number of offside calls in the second half which slowed their momentum and let Mad Hatters back into the game. It took until 20 minutes into the second half for Mitchell to score his third before Hudson scored again to make the final score seven.

In the other Premier grade match over the weekend, Central Brown drew 1-all with Kamo to move one point behind fourth placed Mad Hatters. Kerikeri still hold the outright lead with Tikipunga and Kamo joint second.
